Thou comest in peace, to give life to Egypt. O hidden deity who scatterest darkness, who moistenest the fields, to bring food to dumb animals, O Thou the precious one, descending from heaven to give drink to the earth, O friend of bread, Thou who gladdenest our cottages! Thou art the master of fishes; when Thou art in our fields no bird dares touch the harvest.

But because Thou art too intimately within them, and they never at home, Thou art to them an unknown God; for while they rove and wander abroad, the intimate part of themselves is most remote from their sight. The order and beauty Thou scatterest over the face of Thy creatures are like a glaring light that hides Thee from and dazzles their sore eyes.

Sweet air, that circlest round those radiant tresses, And floatest, mingled with them, fold on fold, Deliciously, and scatterest that fine gold, Then twinest it again, my heart's dear jesses, Thou lingerest on those eyes, whose beauty presses Stings in my heart that all its life exhaust, Till I go wandering round my treasure lost, Like some scared creature whom the night distresses.

Give ear unto a suffering maid, Well-grown but evil-starr'd, For those two suns of thine have lit A fire within her heart. The order and beauty Thou scatterest over the face of Thy creatures are like a glaring light that hides Thee from them and dazzles their sore eyes.

But after this there occurreth a sign respecting a matter which will befall thee and whereof I will not speak." "O thou," cried I, "by Allah, thou weariest me and scatterest my wits and thy forecast is other than good; I sent for thee to poll my head and naught else: so up and shave me and prolong not thy speech."

Thou art heavier than mountains and fouler than corruption and sin. Thou hast in thee nor movement nor blessing nor thinkest of aught but to eat and sleep. If thou make water, thou scatterest; if thou void, thou gruntest like a bursten wine-skin or a surly elephant.

Come near, my friend, and listen while I show to you this note, Which to the lovely lady in bitter grief I wrote; Repeat not what I read to thee, for 'twere a deadly shame, Since thou her face admirest, should slander smirch her name: "O Moorish maiden, who like time, forever on the wing, Dost smiles and tears, with changing charm, to every bosom bring, Thy love is but a masquerade, and thou with grudging hand Scatterest the crumbs of hope on all the crowds that round thee stand.
