In Act II. how are the elements of action, character delineation and emotion intermingled? Sc. i. gives us a picture of the banished Duke and his followers in the Forest of Arden, already prepared for in Act I., introduces us to the personality of the Duke, and in the conversation with the lords prepares us for coming delights in the personality of Jaques. It does not advance the action, at all.

There are other Latin sentences on the same fly-leaf, pronounced by Sir Frederic Madden to be written by a later pen than Shakspere's. To us, at any rate, the above words and numbers appear to proceed from a different hand than the other sentences. Judgments thereon from persons well versed in the writings of that time would be of great interest. 36: Act iii. sc. 2.

To kilt, i.e. to elevate or lift up anything quickly; this applied, ludicrously, to tucking by a halter. Jamieson's Dictionary. In Act IV., Sc. 3, the passage in regard to touching for the King's Evil, from "Enter a Doctor" to "full of grace," was, we may be pretty sure, an interpolation previous to a representation at court, as the Cambridge editors suggest, and it is probably not Shakespeare's; but I would not undertake to say so positively.

At the opening of Act III. what results have been brought about by the action so far? Everybody in the play except Oliver and the bad Duke has arrived in the Forest of Arden. In sc. i. of Act III. the hatred of the Duke is still active as a force, and Oliver through this means is also sent off to finally bring up in the Forest of Arden.

Duke's Mistress, iv. 1: "You shall lead destiny in cords of silk, And it shall follow tame and to your pleasure." Sc. swaggering. Device implies that his rival is perfectly helpless among ladies, a mere child.
