Nor has it been my luck to be present during the production of "Lysistrata," by Aristophanes, or "Bastien et Bastienne," by W. A. Mozart, or "Orpheus," by Monteverde, or "Maestro di Capella," by Pergolese, or "Timon of Athens," by Purcell. Nor have I been present when an eminent technician has rendered Florent Schmitt's "Palais Hanté," or Arnold Schoenberg's "Pierrot Lunaire."

The prosaic truth is that Purcell came before the world as a composer for the theatre in the very year of his appointment to Westminster Abbey, and during the last five years of his life he turned out huge quantities of music for the theatre. It is easy to believe that his first experiments were for the Church.

The youngest Miss Purcell knew as well as her sister Nora that the latter had already commandeered the foxy mare, and, with the connivance of the cowboy, had concealed her in the cow-house; but her sense of tribal honour, stimulated by her sister's threatening eye, withheld her from opening this branch of the subject.

Purcell. "See now what you've done!" "What have I to do with it?" "Then you haven't any bad news for me? Has any one heard from the Colonel? Is he ill?" "Pshaw!" said Marguerite, rising and throwing down her napkin. She went to the window and looked out. "It is time you were gone, little lady," said Mr. Raleigh. She approached Mrs. Purcell and passed her hand down her hair.

McLean?" asked Mary Purcell at the door, after the charade in which she had been engaged was concluded. "Gone across the lake with Nell and Mr. Laudersdale for a letter," replied Master Fred Heath, who had returned that afternoon from the counting-room, with his employer, and now sauntered by. Mrs. Laudersdale started; she had not escaped too early; but then Her heart was beating in her throat.

"No, no, no, no, no! nothing! nothing!" Clear, full, sonant notes; the notes of her true voice. She did not attempt them a second time; nor, when Sir Purcell requested her to sing in the course of the evening, did she comply. "The Signora thinks I have a cold," she said.

If the wiseacre meant that Purcell did not leave, as Haydn and Mozart undoubtedly did, a form in which dullards may compose until the world is sick, then the wiseacre is right But the inventors and perfecters of forms have not always wrought an unmitigated good.

First on the card was a free-for-all dash of a half mile, standing start. The trophy was a regulation target revolver. Badger, of the first class, and Purcell, of the sophomore, held the lead and all but tied each other at the outset. Third in order came Stearns, the agile little right end of the eleven.

I was too much disgusted to make any reply, but I believe my looks expressed my feelings sufficiently, for in a moment he said: 'Well, I see there is nothing to be done, so we may as well be stirring. M'Donough, myself, and my brother will saddle the horses in a jiffy, while you and Purcell settle anything which remains to be arranged.

Haydn was the first to get that principle in an iron grasp and use it, with numberless other devices, to get unity in variety. Not till nearly a hundred years after Purcell's day did that come to pass; but the music of Purcell and of others in his period, showing a sense of key relationships and key values, is a vast step from the music written in the old modes.
