Heman, Ps. lxxxviii., cried out night and day, but yet God's face was hid, ver. 1, 9, 14. The spouse seeketh long, Cant. v.; see Ps. xxii. 1, 2. They are looking for an outgate, but get none. And "hope deferred maketh their heart sick," Prov. xiii. 12.

For, in the Old Testament, God approved the vows of the Nazarenes, Num 6:2ff, and the vows of the Rechabites, who neither drank wine or ate grapes, Jer. 36:6, 19; while he strictly requires that the vow once made be paid, Deut. 23:21f; "It is ruin to a man after vows to retract," Prov. 20:25; "The vows of the just are acceptable," Prov. 15:8.

The word translated buy, is, like other words, modified by the nature of the subject to which it is applied. She named him Cain, that is bought. So in Isa. xi. 11. So Ps. lxxviii. 54. Here "bought" is not applied to persons reduced to servitude, but to those taken out of it. Prov. 8. 22. Prov. xix. 8. Finally, to buy is a secondary meaning of the Hebrew word Kana.
