There are many signs in tradition and early history of relations between Greece and Rome; as the decemviral legislation, the various consultations of the Delphic Oracle, the legends of Pythagoras and Numa, of Lake Regillus, and, indeed, the whole story of the Tarquins; the importation of a Greek alphabet, and of several names familiar to Greek legend Ulysses, Poenus, Catamitus, &c. all antecedent to the Pyrrhic war.

I shall venture, however, to elaborate the subject from the present view-point, even though the principles of Marcus Aurelius are as applicable now as they were in the days of the Roman Empire. One of its suggestions was paralleled by the philosopher-poet when he wrote: "Latius regnes avidum domando Spiritum, quam si Libyam remotis Gadibus iungas et uterque Poenus Serviat uni."

In the prologue of the "Poenulus" of Plautus, it is said of the hero of the title: -Et is omnes linguas scit; sed dissimulat sciens Se scire; Poenus plane est; quid verbit opus't-? Doubts have been expressed as to the correctness of this number, and the highest possible number of inhabitants, taking into account the available space, has been reckoned at 250,000.
