Cursed be the Savages that prance in nakedness! 'Amen, quo' Jobson, 'but where I used to lie Was neither shirt nor pantaloons to catch my brethren by: 'But a well-wheel slowly creaking, going round, going round, By a water-channel leaking over drowned, warm ground Parrots very busy in the trellised pepper-vine And a high sun over Asia shouting: "Rise and shine!"

Among them have been found the Kimiri, native of Sumatra and the peninsula of Malacca; the cocoa-nut of Balci, known by its shape and size; the Dadass, which is planted by the Malays with the pepper-vine, the latter intwining round its trunk, and supporting itself by the prickles on its stem; the soap-tree; the castor-oil plant; trunks of the sago palm; and various kinds of seeds unknown to the Malays settled on the islands.

The pepper-vine is, in its own climate, a hardy plant, growing readily from cuttings or layers, rising in several knotted stems, twining round any neighbouring support, and adhering to it by fibres that shoot from every joint at intervals of six to ten inches, and from which it probably derives a share of its nourishment.

Its soil, with little tillage, produces the nutmeg, the clove, coffee, the cocoa-nut, the sugar-cane, the pepper-vine, gambia or terra japonica, and all the fruits common to Malacca and Java.
