They both wept, and Orpah, the elder, kissed Naomi and went away; but Ruth clung to her and refused to go.

And they took them wives of the women of Moab: the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other was Ruth. And they dwelled there about ten years. And Mahlon and Chilion died also, both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.

Subsequent events showed that she had not been worthy of entering into the Jewish communion, for scarcely had she separated from Naomi when she abandoned herself to an immoral life. But with God nothing goes unrewarded. For the four miles which Orpah travelled with Naomi, she was recompensed by bringing forth four giants, Goliath and his three brothers.

The victor shall be "clothed in white raiment," grace shall be perfected in glory; and their names, which were inscribed in the book of life, the register of the church of the first-born, shall be confessed by Christ "before his Father and before his angels," as having "followed the Lamb," when others went back like Orpah.

Nay, nay, my daughters, for it doth me grieve Exceedingly, even for your sakes, that I Do under this so great affliction lie. And here they wept again. And Orpah kiss'd Her mother, But Ruth would be not dismiss'd But clave unto her: unto whom she spake And said, Behold, thy sister is gone back, With her own gods, and people to abide, Go thou along with her.

Ruby untied the ribbon about her neck, took the little key off, and opened the desk, with a feeling of pride. She was quite sure that there could not be a prettier desk in all the world than this one which Orpah had given her, and she was very anxious to show it to Maude, and surprise her with its beauty. "What shall I write my letter on first, Aunt Emma?" she asked.

Yet she would not take them with her to Palestine, because she foresaw contemptuous treatment in store for them as Moabitish women. Orpah was easily persuaded to remain behind. She accompanied her mother-in-law a distance of four miles, and then she took leave of her, shedding only four tears as she bade her farewell.

Independently of these general considerations, the history of Ruth, in connection with that of Naomi and Orpah, has been always regarded as singularly interesting: it is a most pathetic tale, illustrative of the operation of the tenderest of the domestic affections, in unison with genuine religion: it exhibits the most artless simplicity of manners, the most virtuous sensibilities, and the most affecting interpositions of Providence.

In return for the forty steps Orpah had accompanied her mother-in-law Naomi, Goliath the Philistine, her son, was permitted to display his strength and skill for forty days, and in return for the four tears Orpah had shed on parting from her mother-in-law, she was privileged to give birth to four giant sons. Of the four, Goliath was the strongest and greatest.
