Whether emotion follows acts or leads to acts remains a disputed question, but certainly emotion gives charm and significance to life and distinguishes modes of thinking. Particularly in the dramatic art, this quality of mind gives women special excellence.

Habit helps the individual to be consistent and helps people to know what to expect from one. It helps society to be stable, to incorporate within itself modes of action conducive to the common good. For example, the respect which we all have for the property of others is a habit, and is so firmly intrenched that we should find ourselves unable to steal if we wished to.

"We will add, by way of supplement to M. Comte's doctrine, that much of the daily physical work of a household, even in opulent families, if silly notions of degradation, common to all ranks, did not interfere, might very advantageously be performed by the family itself, at least by its younger members; to whom it would give healthful exercise of the bodily powers, which has now to be sought in modes far less useful, and also a familiar acquaintance with the real work of the world, and a moral willingness to take their share of its burthens, which, in the great majority of the better-off classes, do not now get cultivated at all.

Siddall returned to the modes and thoughts of a girl. "At home to live with you want only reposeful things. That is why the Greeks, whose instincts were unerring, had so much reposeful statuary. One grows weary of agitating objects. They soon seem hysterical and shallow. The same thing's true of persons. For permanent love and friendship you want reposeful men calm, strong, silent.

It was for this very reason that his uncle did not like it. "Yes, uncle George," said Rollo, again. "That will be an excellent way to go to Lucerne. Don't you think it will?" "No," said Mr. George.

It has been described as a mere revival of Greek modes of thought, and again as a mere revival of mediaeval feeling.

"Spain, the Emperor and the rest of them," said he, "make all three modes of pacification the treaty, the guarantee by the mediating kings, the administration divided between the possessory princes alike impossible. I have no doubt that Villeroy means sincerely, and understands the matter, but meantime we sit by the fire and burn.

Two modes only offer themselves either to embark in the kind of mail stage which goes from Darien through Savannah, Augusta, and Columbia, to Camden, or to take a water passage either to Charleston or Georgetown. Either of these being accomplished, new difficulties will occur in getting from Statesburgh northward. I must be at New-York the first week in November.

Instead of thus spending our mental energy for nought, he would have us regard the whole of Being as one Substance characterized by innumerable attributes, of which Extension and Thought alone come within our human cognizance; while each Attribute is subject to infinite Modes or modifications, which, in their effect on the two attributes known to us extension and thought constitute the universe of our experience.
