Unless one has heard it, no idea can be formed as to what this unearthly noise really is. We are told it is to frighten away evil spirits, to invoke the favor of the gods, to bid, as they fondly hope, a final farewell to ill-luck; and, again, simply because they are happy, and when in this frame of mind, they love to manifest their joy in noisy demonstrations.

The world of experimental philosophy was soon mapped out for posterity by the comprehensive and enterprising genius of Bacon, and the laws explained by which experiment could be dignified into experience. Miss Hargrove naturally had the best command over herself. She had taken her course, and would abide by it, no matter what she might suffer.

Before him reasoning was loose; he introduced a more rigid and precise standard, and its influence is not only manifest in our best works on physics and philosophy, but is even discernible in books on ethics and religion.

Many more remained in the after-meeting than we could speak to; manifest was the power of the Spirit, and much good was done. There was great joy in the little village that night, and for several days following the Lord wrought among the people.
