The next week I found lodgings in the very center of the district of court residences and began to seek out the haunts and places of rendezvous of demi-mondaines, favorites and hangers-on of the Turkish officials. On the second day of my arrival, I had presented my credentials and letters at the German Pera Hospital, and had my name entered as a visiting honorary surgeon.

'I wish you were to be married to-morrow, and I were to be best man. 'Thank you, lad. He only just caught the night train at Eltham, and I slept, desolately enough, at my old lodgings at Miss Dawsons', for that night. Of course the next few days I was busier than ever, doing both his work and my own. Then came a letter from him, very short and affectionate.

He emptied his mug, and then, accompanied by Mr. Wright, fetched his sea- chest from the boarding-house where he was staying, and took it to the young man's lodgings. Fortunately for the latter's pocket the chest contained a good best suit and boots, and the only expenses incurred were for a large, soft felt hat and a gilded watch and chain.

I told him that same night not indeed all that happened to me; but enough of it to satisfy him. I said that I had been a good deal at the Jesuits' lodgings; and at the trial of the three; and that a fellow had attempted to follow me home; but that I had thrown him off. Cousin Tom had the pipe from his mouth and was holding it in his hand, by the time I had done.

I went in a fit of lunacy. I went because I thought Miss Elvan was there. They told me at her Chelsea lodgings that she had gone to St. Jean de Luz. This was on the day after she came into the shop with you. I had been seeing her. We met here and there, when she was sketching. I went crazy. Don't for a moment think the fault was hers don't dream of anything of the kind.

At the Cottage were the school-rooms principally for the younger children; and the Pilgrim House was used mostly for family lodgings. For a time my sleeping apartment was with others in the upper room of the rear wing of the farmhouse, dignified by the name "Attica."

"But if she is irreclaimable, why not leave her?" "So I would, only for the child. I have left her at least, I've taken lodgings in town; but I am always running out to Laurel Grove. I darent trust Lucy to her; and she knows it; for she wouldnt let me take the poor little creature away, although she doesnt care two straws for it. She knows that it gives her a grip over me.

"Give over your government to the men here nominated, Straight; dally not!" The burgomasters signed the paper. "Now," said Pelham, "let one of you go to the watch, discharge the guard, bid them unarm, and go home to their lodgings." A magistrate departed on the errand. "Now fetch me the keys of the gate," said Pelham, "and that straightway, or, before God, you shall die."

"Dear Mr. Warburton, I am settled in my lodgings here, and getting seriously to work. It has occurred to me that you might be able to suggest some quaint corner of old London, unknown to me, which would make a good subject for a water-colour. London has been, I am sure, far too much neglected by artists; if I could mark out a claim here, as the colonists say, I should be lucky.

Her lodgings being nearly opposite her stepfather's former residence, now Farfrae's, she could see Donald and Lucetta speeding in and out of their door with all the bounding enthusiasm of their situation. She avoided looking that way as much as possible, but it was hardly in human nature to keep the eyes averted when the door slammed.
