They are bounded anteriorly by the frontal bone, posteriorly by the occipital, and laterally by the temporal and sphenoid bones. The two bones make a beautiful arch to aid in the protection of the brain. The temporal bones, forming the temples on either side, are attached to the sphenoid bone in front, the parietals above, and the occipital behind.

"Miss Simpson," he said, coming stiffly forward, "I should like to hear you sing that song once more before I Won't you sing it?" "Why, yes," she said, and she slipped laterally into the piano-seat. At the end of the first stanza he gave a long sigh, and then he was silent to the close.

Costa reports a case in which there were five canine teeth in the upper jaw, two placed laterally on either side, and one on the right side behind the other two. The patient was twenty-six years of age, well formed and in good health. In some cases there is fusion of the teeth. Pliny, Bartholinus, and Melanthon pretend to have seen the union of all the teeth, making a continuous mass.

A half-compression handle by which the exhaust cam is moved laterally on the side shaft as required is not needed on very small engines. Further reference will be made to this in another chapter, and, although this is not a necessity on a small engine, it is always employed on engines over 2 B.H.P. In fig. 1, HW is the cooling water outlet and CW the inlet.

For, in cases like the present, the drawing of the molecules asunder longitudinally is always accompanied by their approach to each other laterally; while the longitudinal squeezing is accompanied by lateral retreat. Each half of the bar of wood exhibits this antithesis, and is therefore double-refracting. Let us now repeat this experiment with a bar of glass.

Speech gives us this power laterally, as it were, in immediate personal contact. For permanent use speech becomes oral tradition a poor dependence. Literature gives not only an infinite multiplication to the lateral spread of communion but adds the vertical reach. Through it we know the past, govern the present, and influence the future.

These anomalous appearances may partly be explained by supposing great solid wedges of intrusive gneiss to have been forced in laterally between strata to which I found them to be in many sections unconformable.

I lifted my head a little and peeped over a mass of creepers; beyond the creepers was a dense bush of sharp-pointed aloes, of that kind of which the leaves project laterally, and on the other side of the aloes, not fifteen paces from us, I made out the horns, neck, and the ridge of the back of a tremendous old bull.

As with the strawberry, so it is generally with the twining shoots of the Hibbertia dentata, which climbs laterally from bush to bush; for these shoots, if placed in a position inclined downwards, show little and sometimes no tendency to curve upwards.
