Had she heard of the most recent Etruscan excavations at Grosseto? Wonderful! A whole host of new clues! Boni Lanciani the whole learned world in commotion. A fragment of what might very possibly turn out to be a bi-lingual inscription was the last find. Were we at last on the brink of solving the old, the eternal enigma?

Let me quote the account of it given by a girl of the party: Signor Lanciani is a great man who combines being the top authority in his profession with a kindness and bonhomie which make even an ignoramus feel happy with him and with the frankest love for flanerie and "sport." We all fell in love with him.

So far as the record of the Acts of the Apostles is concerned, there is no evidence at all for or against, but tradition is all on the side of those who assert it. The position taken by Signor Lanciani on this point seems to us a very sensible one.

LANCIANI, MARCELLA. Born in Rome, where her studies were made under Professor Giuseppe Ferrari in figure drawing, and under Signor Onorato Carlandi the great water-color artist of the Roman Campagna in landscape and coloring.

On another occasion I recall him in company with the well-known antiquary, Signer Lanciani, who came over to lunch, amusing us all by the combination of learning with le sport which he affected.

This was Piranesi's self-imposed mission, begun as an exalted youth, finished as an irritable old man. Among his architectural restorations, made at the request of Clement XIII, were the two churches of Santa Maria del Popolo and Il Priorato. Lanciani says that Il Priorato is "a mass of monstrosities inside and out."

She would have scorned to pretend, and her pose, if she had one, was a pose of ignorance she claimed less than she might. But the Master soon discovered that she had many of her father's tastes, that she knew something of archæology he bore it even when she shyly quoted Lanciani that she read Latin, and was apparently passionately fond of some kinds of poetry.

At Rome I was taken about by Lanciani, the eminent archaeologist in control of the excavations, who showed me beautiful things newly discovered and now kept in temporary rooms near the Capitol.

This is one of those practical arguments which are always more interesting than those which depend upon theories and opinions. However, there are many books on both sides of the question which may be consulted. We are content to follow Signor Lanciani. The special sanctity and importance of Il Borgo originated in this belief. The shrine of the apostle was its centre and glory.

"Well, talk to her of Rome, and see if you are not pleased." The Master shrugged his shoulders. "They can all do it the clever sort. They know too much about the Forum. They make me wish sometimes that Lanciani had never been born." Sorell laughed. "This girl is not a pedant." "I take your word. And of course I remember her father. No pedantry there.
