The New York Canoe Club have adopted the Nautilus for their model. We still need a distinctive American type for our waters, more like the best Indian canoe than the European models here presented. These modern yacht-like canoes are really improved kyaks, and in their construction we are much indebted to the experience of the inhabitants of the Arctic Circle.

Then all the men in the village would rush for their kyaks and set out after the walrus. The men were brave and enjoyed the dangerous sport, but the women used to watch anxiously until they saw the kyaks coming home towing the walrus behind them.

Then they would rush down to the shore, help pull the kyaks up on the beach, where they cut the walrus in pieces and divided it among the families of the hunters. When the snow had melted on the Big Rock, hundreds of sea-birds made their nests there and filled the air with their cries.

There must be plenty of boats here." "Nothing but skin boats, kyaks, and bidarkas you know. Anyhow, you couldn't cross at this time of year it's too stormy; these Straits is the worst piece of water on the coast. No, you'll have to wait." Emerson sank back into his chair, and stared hopelessly at the fire. "Better have some breakfast," the trader continued; but the other only shook his head.

The men gently pushed it farther out until it floated. Then the men got into their kyaks at the water's edge, fastened their skin coats over the rims, and paddled out into deep water. At last, when all the boats, big and little, were afloat, Kesshoo called out, "We are going north. Follow me." The women obeyed the signal of Koko's father and the Angakok. The paddles dipped together into the water.

The other two he rigged with his pack outfit, storing his varied belongings in two pair of kyaks, and loading kyaks and bedding on the horses with a deft speed that bespoke long practice. He was too busy to talk, and Hazel sat beside the fire, watching in silence. When he had tucked up the last rope end, he turned to her. "There," he said; "we're ready to hit the trail. Can you ride?"

Along the front of the row of houses were immense shell heaps, from which we dug ivory, that is, walrus teeth; carvings, stone lamps, spear heads, portions of kyaks, whips, komatiks, as the sleds are called, etc., etc., and bones innumerable of all the varieties of birds, fish and game on which the early Eskimo dined; as well as remnants of all the implements which Eskimos used in the household generations ago, and which can nearly all now be recognized by the almost identically shaped and made implements in the houses of Eskimos there in Hopedale, so little do they change in the course of centuries.

After her swarmed a crowd of slant-eyed, copper-hued Aleuts; those in the kyaks astern cast off and paddled toward the beach. "I've got fifty men, the best on the river; I tried to get more, but there aren't any more." "Fingerless" Fraser slapped himself resoundingly upon the thigh and exploded profanely; Boyd seized the girl's hands in his and wrung them. "Cherry, you're a treasure!"

The big boats waited until the men had all paddled to the shore and beached their kyaks, then they were drawn carefully up on to the sand, and every one got out. The beach at once became a very busy place.

He slouched for a time in his chair by the fire. Then from some place among his books he unearthed a map, and, spreading it on the table, studied it a while. After that he dragged in his kyaks from outside, and busied himself packing them with supplies for a journey tea and coffee and flour and such things done up in small canvas sacks.
