The scenery is sometimes very lovely: mountain-ranges are to be observed rising one above another, in that wild conglomeration peculiar to volcanic countries; and in the Island of Nipon the snowy cone of Fusiyama is almost always visible from the higher ground. The hilly country is thickly wooded; but terraces of fields are sometimes cut in the sides, where the formation of the ground permits.
Formerly an active volcano, Fuji even now emits steam from sundry crevices near the summit, and will some day probably fill the good people at Yoshiwara and adjacent villages with a lively sense of its power. Fuji is the special pride of the Japs, its loveliness appealing strongly to the national sense of landscape beauty. Of it their poet sings: "Great Fusiyama, tow'ring to the sky.
Fusiyama stands alone among mountains, a vast pyramid rising as Cheops does from the plain, no "rascally comparative" near to dispute its sway. WEDNESDAY, November 27. The crater is very deep, with irregular rocky walls of a sulphurous character. On the eve of the day fixed for the attack on the city, Nitta stood on the sea-shore in front of his army, before him the ocean with blue islands visible afar, behind him lofty mountain peaks, chief among them the lordly Fusiyama. I have not been able to look on this act unmoved, and have come to punish the traitors in yonder city by the aid of these loyal troops.
It is always comforting to know that one's interests are in much abler hands than his own, and I always have this pleasure when Vandy is about. Wherever we go, Fusiyama looks down upon us. What a beautiful cone it is, and how grandly it pierces the heavens, its summit clad with perpetual snow! No wonder that the Japanese represent it on so many of their articles.
