We acknowledge that the tone of their minds was often injured by straining after things too high for mortal reach; and we know that, in spite of their hatred of popery, they too often fell into the worst vices of that bad system, intolerance and extravagant austerity, that they had their anchorites and their crusades, their Dunstans and their De Montforts, their Dominics and their Escobars.

And when the county-town lost its attraction for the Astleys, the Dunstans, the Waverhams, how could it be supposed that the Domvilles, the Bextons, and the Wildes would continue to go and winter there in their second-rate houses, and with their increased expenditure? Even that was not so very bad, compared with the next innovation on the old glories.

The Astleys, the Dunstans, the Waverhams names of power in that district go up duly to London in the season, and have sold their residences in the county-town fifty years ago, or more.

But in spite of Dunstans, Brunos and Bernards, the monastic institution keeps on crumbling. The edifice will not stand much more propping and tinkering. While we admire this display of moral force, this commendable struggle of fresh courage and new hope against disintegrating forces, the conviction gains ground that something is radically wrong with the institution.

Since then the music has not been very brilliant. There are religious services every Sunday morning and evening at St. Thomas's, and on Thursday night a small gathering of the faithful takes place in the building. The trustees of the church are Miss Margaret Ann Beckles, St. Leonard's; Samuel Husband Beckles, Esq., of the Middle Temple; the Rev. Edward Auriol, St. Dunstans; the Rev.

"I don't think she has been very happy or very pleased of late," the girl said. "I think she has had some disappointments, poor dear mamma; and Grace has made her go out of town for three or four days in the hope of a little change. They've gone down to see an old lady, Lady St. Dunstans, who never comes to London now and who, you know she's tremendously old was papa's godmother.

Penzance says is that he's like the men that built things in the beginning fought for them fought Romans and Saxons and Normans perhaps the whole lot at different times. I used to like to get Mr. Penzance to tell stories about the Mount Dunstans. They were splendid. It must be pretty fine to look back about a thousand years and know your folks have been something.

There was a slight accident and we were thrown together for a few moments. Afterwards I met him by chance again. I did not know who he was." Lord Westholt showed signs of hesitation anew. In fact, he was rather disturbed. She evidently did not know anything whatever of the Mount Dunstans.

"I thought only Americans took their fates in their hands in that way. For a man of his class to face a rancher's life means determination. It means the spirit " with a low little laugh at the leap of her imagination "of the men who were Mount Dunstans in early days and went forth to fight for what they meant to have. He went to fight. He ought to have won. He will win some day."

She contrived it so delicately that afterwards neither Cai nor 'Bias could remember precisely at what date whether on the Wednesday or on the Thursday they slipped back into the old comfortable groove. The arch occupied their thoughts. Cai would say, "I hear the Dunstans are makin' great preparations in their back-yard. They mean to bring their show out at the last moment, and step it in barrels."
