Sect. 7. 7th. I will now apply this argument, taken from superstition, particularly to holidays. Superstitiosum esse docemus, saith Beza, arbitrari unum aliquem diem altero sanctiorem. This is but falsely pretended, for as Didoclavius observeth, aliud est deputare, aliud dedicare, aliud sanctificare.
The motto 'Carpe diem, which I had found in my father's Horace and had engraved upon my seal ring, unexpectedly gained a new significance by no longer translating it "enjoy," but "use the day," till the time came when the two meanings seemed identical.
This translation bears different names in rubrics, decrees and liturgical writings translatio ad diem, fixam, translatio ad diem assignatam, mutatio, etc. Accidental translation means occasional transference, a transfer in one year and not in another.
