New Testament scholars have long been interested in a manuscript of the Gospels known, from its present habitation in the Leicester town-library, as the Leicester Codex; its date being variously assigned to the fourteenth or fifteenth century.

It is true that Saviozzo da Siena tells us: "Qui comincio a leggere Dante in pria Retorica vulgare e molti aperti Fece di sua Poetica armonia" and that Manetti, an early biographer, seems to support the theory. But the best evidence, if evidence it can be called, which we have for this theory is to be found in a codex in the Laurentian Library, quoted by Bandini and cited by Dr.

In the same case repose the Codex Sinaiticus, Codex Alexandrinus, and Codex Vaticanus, three great folios, in the original Greek and Hebrew, sacred to scholars as the works on which all authority for the Scriptures rests. Hilgenfeld, in his edition of the Epistle of Barnabas, repels somewhat testily the imputation of Tischendorf, who criticises him as if he supposed that the saying in St. We now possess six MSS. of the Epistle of Barnabas, including the famous Codex Sinaiticus, the accuracy of which in the Biblical portions can be amply tested, and all of these six MSS., without exception, contain the passage.
