Nothing shows one who his friends are like prosperity and ripe fruit. I had a good friend in the country, whom I almost never visited except in cherry-time. By your fruits you shall know them. I like to go into the garden these warm latter days, and muse. To muse is to sit in the sun, and not think of anything.

Let him do that, and he shall always be made welcome; yes, even though he come in force and in cherry-time. If he were, he would hardly speak so disrespectfully of these batrachians. Mr. C. N. Allen, in Bulletin of the Nuttall Ornithological Club, July, 1881.

I do not remember to have ever met a slave who could tell of his birthday. They seldom come nearer to it than planting-time, harvesttime, cherry-time, spring-time, or fall-time. A want of information concerning my own was a source of unhappiness to me even during childhood. The white children could tell their ages. There is an amazing quantity of Number Twos, because of "stolen nests" and the lack of proper coops and runs. But we seem to get away with them all. Dinkie now loves them and would eat more than one at a time if I'd let him. The gluttony of the normal healthy three-year-old child, by the way, is something incredible. Dinkie reminds me more and more of a robin in cherry-time.
