The Education is in fact the record, tragic and pathetic underneath its genial irony, of the defeat of fine aspirations and laudable ambitions. It is the story of a life which the man himself, in his old age, looked back upon as a broken arch.

Here it paused, and for one night upon the ruins of the Bastille rested the body of Voltaire rested in triumph, in glory rested on fallen wall and broken arch, on crumbling stone still damp with tears, on rusting chain, and bar and useless bolt above the dungeons dark and deep, where light had faded from the lives of men and hope had died in breaking hearts.

The great cat crouches with head low, extended throat, and ears erect. The shoulders are drawn far back, the fore paws huddled beneath the jaws. The long, lithe back rises in an arch in the middle, sinking thence to the haunches, while the angry tail makes a strong curve along the ground to the right.

Here gingerbread and fruit were served, and the girls began their games again. Little Mary Fuller sat upon the grass, singing, while the rest formed a ring, darting, with their garlands and bouquets, like a chain of flowers, through an arch made by the uplifted hands of Isabel Chester and a little lame girl who could not run.

His tongue unsteadied with joy, he told her again, as he had told her on that other day; and watching the old, old wonder of her grow in his eyes, she listened as though she were taking the words, one by one, from his lips. But there was nothing boyish in the crooked little arch of her mouth nothing boyish in the depths of her dark and brimming eyes.

They are banded at the string-course below the triforium, and end at the sill of the clearstorey in a compound capital, of which the three central members are square, and the others round. The vaulting hides a feature which is not found in the transept, namely, a little lancet arch whose apex comes exactly behind the roof-shaft in each bay.

To the wonder of all, when they had been thus removed, the arch stood firmly in its place, and there it stands to-day, sound and apparently safe, after being in use for two hundred years, and having passed through the severe test of more than one slight earthquake.

The bit of the lower cornice under this arch I could not see, and therefore had not drawn; it was supplied from beneath another arch. I am afraid, however, the reader has lost the thread of my story while I have been recommending my veracity to him. I was insisting upon the healthy tone of this Lucca work as compared with the old spectral Lombard friezes.

"I am engaged," said Jasper abruptly. On hearing this Marie felt more at her ease, and, being of a very sympathetic nature, she at once courted the confidence of the stranger. "May I venture to ask her name?" said Marie, with an arch smile. "I may not tell," replied Jasper; "I have a comrade who is entitled to know this secret before any one else.

"Camden Street is there, on a shelf of the hills, and through the arch of its elms you can look off over the forests of the lowlands until they end in the blue reaches of the ocean, if you could see far enough." "If you could see far enough," said Victoria, unconsciously repeating his words.
