Well might a Scottish lord, who heard Andrewes preach before the Court on the occasion of James's visit to Scotland in 1617, say of him as he did, when asked his opinion by the King, that he played with his text rather than preached upon it.

You will not all have forgotten that meditation, but I will read it to you to-night again. "How fearful," says Andrewes, in his terror, "will Thy judgment be, O Lord, when the thrones are set, and the angels stand around, and men are brought in, and the books are opened, and all our works are inquired into, and all our thoughts are examined, and all the hidden things of darkness!

But as we were going away I overheard him saying to Mr. Andrewes, "All the same, a boy can't be with a nurse for ever. She has every good quality, except good English. And he is not a baby now. One forgets how time passes. I must see about a tutor." Naturally enough, I did my best to give Nurse Bundle a faithful account of my attempt to realize her idea of "dropping in," with all that came of it.

I agree with Walton that those prayers are full of unction and instruction, and that some of them are of the 'highest magnetical power'; and that, as rendered into modern phraseology, they are most beautiful devotional compositions, and very models of all that a divinely illuminated mind would address to GOD and CHRIST. For myself, immediately after the Psalms of David I put Jacob Behmen's Holy Week and the prayers scattered up and down through his True Repentance, and beside Behmen I put Bishop Andrewes' Private Devotions.

At first she was put out by there being only two Latin words to three English ones, but she got over the difficulty at last by always reading it thus: "A mo te, I love thee." My Latin had not advanced much beyond this stage when I began to go to Mr. Andrewes every day. Thenceforward I progressed rapidly in my learning. Mr.

"Why, my dear boy, how are you?" "Very well, thank you," said I, getting up and offering my hand; "I've dropped in." "Dear me!" said Mr. Andrewes; "I mean, I'm very glad to see you! Won't you come in? You mustn't sit on the grass." "What a pretty garden you have!" I said, as we walked slowly towards the house. Mr. Andrewes turned round. "Well, pretty well.

I have no doubt that then I acknowledged to myself that it would be a trial of the Anglican Church, which it had never undergone before, not that the Catholic sense of the Articles had not been held or at least suffered by their framers and promulgators, not that it was not implied in the teaching of Andrewes or Beveridge, but that it had never been publicly recognized, while the interpretation of the day was Protestant and exclusive.

It was the discriminating and intelligent Church of England religion of Hooker and Andrewes, which had gone back to something deeper and nobler in Christianity than the popular Calvinism of the earlier Reformation; and though sternly hostile to the system of the Papacy, both on religious and political grounds, attempted to judge it with knowledge and justice.
