The beautiful stones, amethyst, agate, chalcedony, and jasper, are all different kinds of quartz. Another chief material in rocks is a white metal called aluminium. United to oxygen it becomes alumina, the chief substance in clay. Rocks of this kind such as clays, and also the lovely blue gem, sapphire are called Argillaceous Rocks, from the Latin word for clay, and belong to the second class.

These clays, which are eaten not only in Java, but also in Sumatra, New Caledonia, Siberia, Guiana, Terra del Fuego, etc., are essentially composed of silex, alumina, and water in variable proportions, and are colored with various metallic oxides. They are in amorphous masses, are unctuous to the touch, stick to the tongue, and form a fine, smooth paste with water.

The specific gravity of it, according to Malte Brun, is 1.211, that of fresh water being 1.000. It is perfectly transparent. The applications of tests, or reagents, prove that it contains the muriatic and sulphuric acids.
