In a report read to the Academy of Moral Sciences on the results of the law of March 22, 1841, M. Cleveland was one of the first places in the West to recover. Its basis was good, and as the interior of Ohio became more peopled the trade of the canal increased and, of course, Cleveland was so much the more benefited. An account of the concert in La France musicale of May 2, 1841, contained a general characterisation of Chopin's artistic position with regard to the public coinciding with that given by Liszt, but the following excerpts from the other parts of the article may not be unacceptable to the reader: We spoke of Schubert because there is no other nature which has a more complete analogy with him.

To the House of Representatives: I herewith transmit to the House of Representatives, in reply to their resolution of the 21st ultimo, a report from the Secretary of State, with accompanying papers. WASHINGTON, July 19, 1841.

The agonies of homesickness he had endured seemed to haunt even the cold clay. In 1841, a writer made an ardent appeal for the restoration of this glory of German song, to the German soil. The idea became a crusade. But it was not until 1844, and then chiefly by the aid of Wagner, then conductor in Dresden, and a close friend of Caroline and her children, that success was attained.
