After the death of Philippe she returned to Anjou, and went into the Abbey of Fontevraud, where she practised such rigorous penances that her health sank under them. Her son, Foulques V., succeeded to the county in 1109, and was a much better man than could have been expected from the son of such parents.

The monks and retainers of Archbishop Richard fell upon Roger, in the presence of the cardinal and of the synod, threw him to the ground, trampled him under foot, and so bruised him with blows that he was taken up half dead, and his life was with difficulty saved from their violence. The structure then erected in all probability occupied the same site as the upper and lower wards of the present pile; but nothing remains of it except perhaps the keep, and of that little beyond its form and position. In 1109 Henry celebrated the feast of Pentecost with great state and magnificence within the castle.

Stripped of Maine by the Normans and broken by dissensions within, the weak and profligate rule of Fulk Rechin left Anjou powerless. But in 1109 it woke to fresh energy with the accession of his son, Fulk of Jerusalem.

It is, however, characteristic of the Count's policy that, on several occasions, in 1103 and 1109, they signed separate agreements with Henry I, in which they promised him to use all their influence in his favour in case the French king contemplated an expedition against England, and, if their efforts failed, not to give their suzerain more help than they were strictly bound to.

At the time when Count Henry and Dona Teresa were living in the castle, the double Benedictine monastery for men and women had fallen into decay, and in 1109 Count Henry got a Papal Bull changing the foundation into a royal collegiate church under a Dom Prior, and at once began to rebuild it, a restoration which was not finished till 1172.

Under his personal supervision, during the winter of 1666-67, a general census of the colony was taken the first Canadian census of which we have any record. The count showed, as we have already said, a total population of 3215 in Canada at that time 2034 males and 1181 females. The married people numbered 1109, and there were 528 families.

Mohammed, surnamed "The pious and just soul;" in 784, had five children who were the branches of a numerous family. El-Kasem, in 852; brother of Abdullah, from whom it is said the Caliphs of Egypt and Morocco are descended. Ismail; about 890. Ahmed; in 901. El-Hasan; in 943. Abubekr; 996. El-Husan, in 1012. Abubekr El-Arfat, i.e. "The Knower," in 1043. Mohammed, in 1071. Abdullah, in 1109.

The net result at the close of Henry's reign was that the king of England was no stronger than in 1110, unless we count the uncertain prospect of the Angevin succession; while the king of France was master of larger resources and a growing power. It seems most likely that it was in the spring of 1109 that the rivalry of the two kings first led to an open breach.

It cemented the power of the Pope, while freedom from papal interference has ever been dear to the English nation. When Anselm had fought this great fight he died, 1109, in the sixteenth year of his reign as primate of the Church in England, and was buried, next to Lanfranc, in his abbey church.
