Lady Caroline's recollections of things that hadn't happened at the Court of Queen Victoria were notoriously vivid; it was the very widespread fear that she might one day write a book of reminiscences that made her so universally respected.

Honest men have been excluded from the purchase of these lands, while the dishonest and unscrupulous have been permitted to enter them by means of false oath and fraud." These are but the merest glimpses of the widespread frauds in seizing land, whether agricultural, timber or mineral.

The only safe and sure road to the needed control of sexual actions is to be found in knowledge, and the widespread recognition of this fact has led to the new movement for general enlightenment regarding sexual processes in their various relations to human life. It is not surprising that we have turned to seek an educational solution for the problems of sex.

There is the widespread impression that those advocating sex-education believe in giving great prominence to the social diseases; but in opposition to this I cite the report of a committee of the American Federation for Sex Hygiene, published in the Journal of the Society of Sanitary and Moral Prophylaxis, January, 1913, and later reprinted as a pamphlet by the American Social Hygiene Association.

It may suffice to contrast the belief, which in March 1915 was widespread that the Dardanelles would be forced and Constantinople captured in the space of four or five weeks with the circumstance that since then the British troops alone had nearly a hundred thousand casualties and that in the month of January 1916 it became evident that nothing could be gained by further prolonging this painful effort, and the enterprise was abandoned.

But even so they commonly speak a language which is not understood; and inevitably they fail to achieve any widespread result. It is not, then, in the multiplication of schools designed to cater for intellectualists that we see the best hope for the progress of the nation.

Thus the two widows passed from hollow opulence to voluntary poverty, one under the pressure of a vice, the other through the promptings of the purest virtue. None of these petty details are useless in teaching the lesson which ought to be learned from this present history, drawn as it is from the most commonplace interests of life, but whose bearings are, it may be, only the more widespread.
