The late Lord Gerard. 4. Letter to Miss Bird from Trieste, April 10, 1887. 5. The Duchess of Fife. 6. Letter to Miss Bishop, July 21, 1890. Life is a sheet of paper white, Whereon each one of us may write His word or two, and then comes night. "Let me recall the last happy day of my life. It was Sunday, October 19, 1890.

He Was a person of innumerable bows, and fluttered his bright-colored compliments about, till it appeared that never before had such amiable people been asked charity by such a worthy and generous sufferer. In Trieste he had been a journalist, and it was evident enough from his speech that he was of a good education.

At the same time two aeroplanes bombarded the aviation ground at Propecto and the seaplane base in the harbor of Trieste. The Russian front reported increased aerial activity on the following day, January 12, 1917. A German aerial squadron, consisting of thirteen airplanes, dropped about forty bombs on the station and town of Radzivilov.

They saw a great deal of him, for Trieste and Venice were at that period the naval stations of the Austrian Empire. He was, therefore, often in those places, and finally took up his residence in an earthly paradise upon the Adriatic, created by himself and called by him Miramar.

"Why," exclaimed the ambassador, "if it had not been for England, this war would never have happened." Chester looked at the ambassador sharply for a moment. "Good night," he said at last, and fell back in his seat. It was dusk when the train pulled into Trieste, and the party alighted. "We shall spend the night here," the ambassador decided. "I have some work to do."

Vast works were pushed on at Antwerp and Cherbourg: ships and gunboats were to be built at every suitable port from the Texel to Naples and Trieste; and as the result of these labours, the Emperor counted on having 104 ships of the line, which would cover the transports from the Mediterranean, Cherbourg, Boulogne and the Scheldt, and threaten England with an array of 200,000 fighting men.

I had already wondered when I saw the "Karst," near Trieste, and the desert region of Gorz; but these sink into insignificance when compared to the scenery of the Judean mountains. It is difficult to conceive how these regions can ever have been smiling and fertile.

In order to guard against any misconception, however, I should like to add that Canon Waterton did not come to Trieste until some time after The Scented Garden had been burned. That act, in spite of all that has been said to the contrary, was entirely Lady Burton's own act, influenced by no priest, layman, or any person whatever.

She was gorgeously clad without, but as a rule had not a rag, not even a chemise, underneath, unless she were 'in luck. 'In luck, I grieve to say, meant that every boy, youth, and man in Trieste, beginning at twelve and up to twenty-five and twenty-eight, had an affaire with a sartorella; and I may safely assert, without being malicious, that she was not wont to give her heart if we may call it so gratis.

The missing articles were, I believe, finally discovered and routed out of an unoccupied bed, where they had been laid and forgotten by the addle-pated lady, and peace reigned. We sailed from Trieste early on the morning of the 28th of February, and steamed leisurely on our way.
