Without wearying you with explanations, which, indeed, I have no time to write being engaged to drive out with Clara in an hour from this time I will transcribe a portion of a letter received by me, two days since, from a gentleman of unexceptional standing, and upon whose word you may safely depend.

I wish I could here transcribe the most beautiful passage from Ruskin's Giotto and his Works in Padua, pp. 11, 12, describing the contrast between the landscape of Valdarno and the landscape of the hills of the Mugello district. I can only refer readers to the book, printed for the Arundel Society, 1854. See Trucchi, Poesie Italiane Inedite, vol. ii. p. 8.

The task was a difficult one, for the writing, extremely flowing and rapid, is execrable, and most difficult to decipher and to transcribe accurately. 'If you have the Latin version of Busy, curious, thirsty fly, be so kind as to transcribe and send it; but you need not be in haste, for I shall be I know not where, for at least five weeks. I wrote the following tetastrick on poor Goldsmith:

M. de Saussure who will not be suspected of having any such theory in his view, will be found giving the most exemplary confirmation to that system of things. I would therefore beg leave farther to transcribe what he has observed most interesting with regard to that gradation of changed strata. It is in the high passage of the Bon-Homme, tom. 2. p. 179.

Oswald G. Knapp, and from the same source I transcribe the following translation of a hymn written in honour of the reputed "saint and martyr" which concludes the ancient chronicle: "Hail, de Montfort, martyr glorious! Noblest flower of chivalry! O'er the pains of death victorious, England's saviour, praise to thee.
