Beauty of form is the last to be found or admired in artificial as in natural objects. Time is needed to establish it, and training and nicety of perception to enjoy it. Motion or colour is what first interests a child in toys, as in animals; and the barbarian artist decorates long before he designs.

I don't like you I don't like the moon; it gives me a pain here!" and she put her hand to her temples. "Have you got anything for Fanny poor, poor Fanny?" and, dwelling on the epithet, she shook her head mournfully. "You are rich, Fanny, with all those toys." "Am I? Everybody calls me poor Fanny everybody but papa;" and she ran again to Gawtrey, and laid her head on his shoulder.

Certainly the pernicious effects of such toys as have been described are not easily discernible; therein lies the insidiousness of this retarding process. But to those who have watched, as I have done, the natural development of an intelligent child's powers of reflection and imagination unchecked by dolls or toy locomotives there will be neither absurdity nor exaggeration in what I have written.

In the center of the apartment stood a splendid Christmas Tree, the first ever seen in that country. Instead of toys and candles there hung on its lighted boughs diamond stars, pearl necklaces, bracelets of gold ornamented with colored jewels, aigrettes of rubies and sapphires, silken belts embroidered with Oriental pearls, and daggers mounted in gold and studded with the rarest gems.

He really was, I suppose, too little to keep the thought of our trouble long in his mind, even though he had cried so dreadfully the day before, and I think the sight of his forgetting, as it were, made me all the sadder. But when the toys were all arranged in their places, and the long day was over at last, even Racey grew dull, and unlike himself.

If balls and toys were carelessly dropped there he would push them out without delay, and if visitors took up the basket to examine it, he would fix his eyes upon them, thinking, "O yes, you would pick pockets or steal the spoons if I did not watch you."

If it remains in the native state it has no toys of a frivolous nature, a little hoe or a little calabash are considered better training; if it goes into the school, it picks up, with astonishing rapidity, the lessons taught it there giving rise to hopes for its future which are only too frequently disappointed in a few years' time.

And Christianity does it for exactly the opposite reason, because it fears it not at all, and knows it quite enough. So it toys with leviathan, and 'lays its hand on the cockatrice den, and my text is an instance of this.

"Hammy and Berta made great friends with me the other day.... Tell them I haven't forgotten the promise to rummage up some odd native toys I picked up in Rhodesia made of mud and feathers and bits of fur and queerly-shaped seed-pods the most enchanting collection of birds and beasts that ever came out of the Ark.

The ship was to take a cargo of flour to England; there, she was to receive a small assorted cargo for the North-West Coast, and some of the sandal-wood islands; after disposing of her toys and manufactures in barter, she was to sail for Canton, exchange her furs, wood and other articles for teas, &c., and return home.
