The New Essays remained in Leibniz's desk, the Theodicy saw the light. And so, to his own and the succeeding generation, Leibniz was known as the author of the Theodicy. The articles in journals form the immediate background to the two books. Each succeeding ledge to which they mounted grew narrower until scarce room for the foot could be found. When the plateau was gained, it was but a bleak, desolate plain of four or five acres of uneven ground, swept by the winds of eternal winter and presenting a drear and melancholy aspect.

By this neglect, or oversight, a great number of general readers as well as many scientists, through succeeding centuries, have been deprived of the benefit of writings that contained a good share of the fundamental facts about magnetism as known to-day.

She saw and anticipated. "With all your cleverness, Mr. Fleet, I may prove you at fault, and become able to portray what I do not feel or believe."
