As the hours went on, with no abatement of the storm's devastating energy, Claire grew less and less pleased at the prospect. She began to wonder whether the shelter of Flint's roof had not been, after all, the discreet thing. Was not her headlong flight in company with Stillman more open to criticism than the frank acceptance of her employer's hospitality?

The storm's fury seemed to have spent itself, and the fiercer noises outside were no longer audible, only that steady chopping chopping, that no one really understood. Perhaps this only intensified the heart-broken sobbings of the women and children, and the occasional groanings of strong men, who could no longer control their sense of helpless misery.

I thought that a poker player should not be so free with his emotions; but of course I said nothing. When it came his time to bet, he planked down a five-pound note on the table. The other two, as was usual, put down their cards. They were evidently very timorous players. The gambler hesitated for a second, then he put a ten-pound note on Storm's five-pounds.

They stretched out on their anchor lines till the whole fabric of the cabin hummed and crackled with the strain, but the lines held, and the windows being open, prevented the semi-vacuum created by the storm's passing from "exploding" the boat, and tearing off the cabin, or the roof.

Mahony, sitting reading after everyone else had retired, saw it coming, and lamp in hand went round the house to secure hasps and catches; then stood at the window to watch the storm's approach. In one half of the sky the stars were still peacefully alight; the other was hidden by a dense cloud, which came racing along like a giant bat with outspread wings, devouring the stars in its flight.

She had seen them embrace; it made him uncomfortable, but the storm was passing away, already the thunder was more distant. The old woman made no reply, only her eyes glared at them. Peter put his hand in Clare's "It's all right; I think the old thing's deaf and dumb and blind look, the storm's passing there's a bit of blue sky. Isn't it odd an old thing like that..." Clare, shuddered a little.

Of course we knew that any young fellow who goes out to America to begin farming, does not, as a general rule, leave people in England exceedingly well off, and probably this fact, more than any other, accounted for the remorse visible on Storm's countenance.

All these mingled motives caused the determination which made Ruth sit in the little inn-parlour at Abermouth during the wild storm's passage. She wondered if she had fulfilled all Mr Bradshaw's directions. She looked at the letter. Yes! everything was done.

Momentarily, as he watched, at once fascinated and appalled, mountainous ridges of blackness heaved up out of the storm's grey heart, offshore, and, curling crests edged with luminous white, swung in to crash and shatter thunderously upon the sands. Awed and disappointed, Amber drew back.

They moved, some clustering along the wave line, a few strung up the cliff. And they were not part of the storm's fireworks. Men here why at this moment? Another bolt of lightning showed him the answer. On the reef fringe which ran a tongue of land into the sea hung a ship two ships pounded by every hammer wave. Shipwrecks ... and those lights must mark castle dwellers drawn to aid the survivors.
