The lack of newspaper publicity after the Washington sightings had had some effect because the number of reports dropped from nearly 500 in July to 175 in August, but this was still far above the normal average of twenty to thirty reports a month. September 1952 started out with a rush, and for a while it looked as if UFO sightings were on the upswing again.
It was the same old story: Miller was an experienced pilot, a former Air Force instructor and air freight pilot with several thousand hours flying time. Commercial pilots came in for more than their share of the sightings in 1956. On January 22, UFO investigators talked to the crew of a Pan American airliner.
In no way did the article reflect the excitement and anxiety of the age of Project Sign when secret conferences preceded and followed every trip to investigate a UFO report. This was the Air Force being "forced" into reluctantly investigating the UFO reports. Laced through the story were the details of several UFO sightings; some new and some old, as far as the public was concerned.
The book was based on a few of our good UFO reports that were released to the press. To say that the book is factual depends entirely upon how one uses the word. The details of the specific UFO sightings that he credits to the Air Force are factual, but in his interpretations of the incidents he blasts way out into the wild blue yonder.
We received quite a few questionnaires answered in such a way that it was obvious that the observer was drawing heavily on his imagination. From this standard questionnaire the project worked up two more specialized types. One dealt with radar sightings of UFO's, the other with sightings made from airplanes.
Time reported that pickpockets were doing a fabulous business working the sky-gazing crowds that gathered when a plativolo was seen. Mexico's Department of National Defense reported that there had been some good reports but that the stories of finding crashed saucers weren't true. On March 8 one of the best UFO sightings of 1950 took place right over ATIC.
It had been shipped without a combat casing. "Koa, make a final check. You can untie the landing boat, except for one line. We’ll be taking off in a few minutes." "Right, sir." Koa glided toward the landing boat, which was out of sight over the horizon. It was nearly time. Rip had a moment’s misgiving. Had his figures or his sightings been off? His red hair prickled at the thought.
His vision had been obscured because of the rain. "Maximum of ten feet across and maybe eight tall. It was probably less." "Okay. So the reason sightings are confined to this area is because the objects are fairly small. When people see them, they're relatively close, and fairly low.
Prior to the Washington sightings in only a very few of the many instances in which radar had picked up UFO targets had the targets themselves supposedly been seen visually. Radar experts had continually pointed out this fact to us as an indication that maybe all of the radar targets were caused by freak weather conditions.
But the way the stories got written, you'd think us Eastern Shore folks were short a few marbles. We got tired of being laughed at, so no one says much about the saucers any more." "But lots of people see them?" Scotty asked. "Sure. Anyone that happens to be outdoors." "Ever report these sightings to the authorities?" Rick wanted to know. "Did at first. Called the State Police myself.
