Here is the world of the press and of letters; here are institutions, an army, a navy, commerce, glimpses of great ships going to and fro on distant seas, of India, of Australia. This one book is an epitome of English life, almost of the empire itself.

She went willingly enough, as she reverenced the old teacher, taking me with her. "My daughter," he said, "have you a mind to learn more of those things of which we have spoken?" "I can wish nothing better," she answered. "Then," he said, "I have bidden Phelim go across the seas with you to teach you and yours. Will it please you that he shall do so?"

Twelve Spanish merchantmen rigged as frigates lay in the harbour, and Drake observed that cargo of small bulk but ponderous weight, and evidently precious, was being stowed in their capacious holds. Was this the gold and silver bullion that was enriching Spain beyond men's dreams? Whence did it come? Could English privateers intercept it on the high seas?

Day after day they struggled against the seas in the teeth of a northerly gale, and night after night returned to their camps, repulsed but not disheartened. At the rapids they ran their boats through, hit or miss, and after infinite toil and hardship, on the breast of a jarring ice flood, arrived at the Klondike.

Trains were hurrying to and fro; the great ships were going down the sapphire seas; children were at play, and the world wide marts were busying with the daily affairs of men. "Jewels!" she murmured, gazing at the sky beyond the grilled window. Was there ever a precious stone that lay not in the shadow of blood and misery? Poor, poor, foolish father!

I can see the heads of her topsails now, and they are so square and symmetrical, that gold bands are below beyond all doubt." "Perhaps he's a Frenchman Johnny Crapaud keeps cruisers in these seas as well as the rest on'em." "Johnny Crapaud's craft don't spread such arms, sir. The ship is either English or American; and he's heading for the Mona Passage as well as ourselves."

We shuddered and escaped, and drove a few yards and saw "The seas that mourn, in flowing purple of their Lord forlorn," the wide long stretch north and south of white sand, and the log surf rafts, and the dark fishermen going up and down on the blue swell and didn't we draw a breath of relief of God's pure air.
