When God sends a true messenger his words will find a ready response in the Christian heart. Christ is a tender Shepherd. You may some time think He has not been a very tender Shepherd to you; you are passing under the rod. It is written, "Whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth." A friend of mine lost all his children.

Of them Job saith, "They lead all their days in wealth, and in a moment of an hour descend into their graves and are painfully buried in hell." St. Paul saith unto the Hebrews that those whom God loveth he chastiseth, "And he scourgeth every son of his that he receiveth." St. Paul saith also, "By many tribulations must we go into the kingdom of God."

If God has loved us, if God will receive us, then let us submit loyally and humbly to His law "Whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth." All Saints' Day Sermons. I believe that the wisest plan of bearing sorrow is sometimes not to try to bear it as long as one is not crippled for one's every-day duties but to give way to sorrow, utterly and freely.

My brethren, all my brethren, be not deceived; God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap. Whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth. Thou, O God, wast a God that forgavest them, but Thou tookest vengeance on their inventions.

But inquires the objector, does God punish for the good of his creatures? We will let Paul settle this question Heb. Xii. Chap. "For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards and not sons.

And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?

It is true, and you will find it true, that sickness and all sorts of troubles, are sent to correct and amend in us whatever doth offend the eyes of our Heavenly Father. It is true, and you will find it true, that whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth.

"The master, being wroth with what he termed such slovenly and doltish work, did promise that he would soundly whip me for it and " "Whip THEE!" said Tom, astonished out of his presence of mind. "Why should he whip THEE for faults of mine?" "Ah, your Grace forgetteth again. He always scourgeth me when thou dost fail in thy lessons." "True, true I had forgot.
