I can't begin to tell you how attached I have already become to Mr. Robbins. I have already made up my mind that when his own front lawn gets pretty well cleaned out I shall ask neighbor Robbins to pasture his sacred cow, horned horse, and five-legged calf in our front yard for a spell. I shall never forget the shock I had one afternoon while Mr. Robbins and I were visiting on our front lawn.

Whenever the Spaniards shot one of our men, it struck me as just about as unnecessary and regrettable as that was. "But I'm dropping Willie Robbins out of the conversation.

The fact is, the detectives had been talking to me about that very thing, and I felt shy; but, sir, I know you are a friend of the family, and I want to tell you now that that same gentleman, whoever he was, Mr. Robbins, he called himself then, was at the house again tonight, sir, and the name he gave me this time to carry to Miss Leavenworth was Clavering.

Two miles below the two men could see the little post known as Mexican Tanks, scattered out in a fertile, cottonwood-grown valley. With one accord, they shook hands. "Now will yo' believe me," asked the Texan, "when I tell yo' that Blizzahd's a smaht hoss?" Dave Robbins grinned. "So's his master," he chuckled. "And speakin' o' Blizzard again, I guess we owe him some water and a peck of oats.

This latter was the favorite consulting room of the girls, and to-day they were all busily paring early apples and quinces to put down in stone crocks, against the coming of winter days. "Mother," called Helen, "were you ever in Delphi, where Uncle Cassius lives?" Mrs. Robbins sat down on the arm of Jean's chair and smiled at the eager faces upturned to hers.

Robbins' farm lay in what appeared to be an ancient valley, several miles in width, although only a small stream now winds through it to the sea seven miles away. "So you are from Illinois," said Mr. Robbins, after Percy had introduced himself and explained the nature of his visit.

Captain Robbins could hardly speak when we gathered round him on the forecastle, the seas breaking over the quarter-deck in a way to render that sanctuary a very uncomfortable berth. As soon as he could command himself, he told us that the ship was hopelessly lost.

A bull in a china-shop could hardly create the havoc which the Baylor pup, with his one hundred and seventy-five pounds of animal spirits, wrought in our lawn. Next morning the lawn looked as if it had been honored with a nocturnal visitation from Burr Robbins' galaxy of domesticated wild beasts. Curiously enough, the Baylors thought it was very funny.

Bristow continued to talk in this strain for half an hour, his companion now and then putting in a word to assist him; and he talked to such good purpose that Gus Robbins finally consented to make one of the large party that was to desert the post that very night.

"Seems a powerful sight of whales, Mr. Robbins," the old man said, passing the mate the glasses. Mr. Robbins went up and took a good squint all around the horizon. "Three hundred if there's one, Cap'n!" he declared with reverent enthusiasm. "Does seem so, doesn't it?" admitted the captain. The crew had tumbled up and were getting the boats ready.
