Attention is concentrated rather on the rite than on the spiritual process, which underlies it, and of which the rite is but the expression; and then it becomes possible to give a false interpretation to the meaning of the rite.

Of any given rite, opinion or institution, of the many which have passed for almost two millenniums unchallenged under the Christian name, men about us are now asking: But how much of it is Christian? In what measure have we to think of it as derived from some other source, and representing the accommodation and assimilation of Christianity to its environment in process of its work?

This might or might not be the remains of the forked tree, but since we were working on a chance, this struck us as a good one to try. It was impossible to tell where the fork had been, but we made a guess at it and proceeded to follow directions. "Here cut a Rite Anggel N. N. E. till Tong of Spit is lost." This at least was specific and definite.

The voice of the consecrator was heard, low till it came to the words "So potently and royally may he rule, against all visible and invisible foes, that the royal throne of the Angles and Saxons may not desert his sceptre." As the prayer ceased, came the symbolical rite of anointment.

These kinds of analogous examples, then, it suffices merely to mention.

He had always been on the verge of realizing before, he realized now, the two entirely different and antagonistic strands that interweave in the twisted rope of contemporary religion; the old strand of the priest, the fetishistic element of the blood sacrifice and the obscene rite, the element of ritual and tradition, of the cult, the caste, the consecrated tribe; and interwoven with this so closely as to be scarcely separable in any existing religion was the new strand, the religion of the prophets, the unidolatrous universal worship of the one true God.

Each of these will furnish an appropriate subject for consideration. The Rite of Discalceation. The rite of discalceation, or uncovering the feet on approaching holy ground, is derived from the Latin word discalceare, to pluck off one's shoes. The usage has the prestige of antiquity and universality in its favor.

"If thou dost break her virgin knot before All sanctimonious ceremonies may With full and holy rite be minister'd;" in that case what would follow? "No sweet aspersion shall the heavens let fall, To make this contract grow; but barren hate, Sour-ey'd disdain and discord, shall bestrew The union of your bed with weeds so loathly That you shall hate it both.
