'How long did it take you to paint that picture? somebody asked Sir Joshua Reynolds. 'All my life! he replied. Anybody can grow fine flowers in the daytime. But what can you grow in the dark? That is the challenge of the mushrooms what can you grow in the dark? 'The nights are the test! as Charlotte Brontë used to say.

He has altered my ideas of Sir Joshua Reynolds, whom, from the expressions used by Goldsmith, Johnson, and others, I used to think an amiable and benevolent character.

"You have a boy in this house, named Herbert Reynolds?" "Yes." "A boy who ran away from Mr. Joel Barton, with whom I placed him?" "What right had you to place him anywhere, Mr. Ford?" demanded the lady. "That's my business. Permit me to say that it is no affair of yours." "I judge differently. The boy is sick and under my charge." "I am his natural guardian, madam." "Who made you so, Mr. Ford?"

"Have you lived here many years?" The prospector threw aside his burnt match, gave his pack an extra hitch, picked up his rifle and moved forward. "Guess we'd better git on," he said. "Thar's a little brook we want to reach in time fer dinner. Ye don't find much water in these valleys." Reynolds moved along by his companion's side, wondering why he did not answer his question.

On receiving this information General Gaines called on the Governor of Illinois for additional forces, and on June 25th Governor Reynolds and General Joseph Duncan arrived at Rock River with sixteen hundred mounted militia. The Indians from the Sac village, being informed of this movement, deserted their homes with their wives and children and crossed the Mississippi.

"Ah!" Miss Reynolds began, then paused abruptly. "But intelligence, life, truth, love are characteristics, attributes which anyone may possess and cultivate." "Yes, considered in that sense they are attributes. But whence came they?" Katherine demanded, with glowing eyes. "The source of life must be Life itself, must it not? The same must also be true of truth and love.

They wanted chiefly to be left alone; then if the man was in regular work life went easily and was not without its pleasures: there was plenty of time for gossip, after the day's work a glass of beer was very good to drink, the streets were a constant source of entertainment, if you wanted to read there was Reynolds' or The News of the World; 'but there, you couldn't make out 'ow the time did fly, the truth was and that's a fact, you was a rare one for reading when you was a girl, but what with one thing and another you didn't get no time now not even to read the paper.

There was little rest at the Hall that night. When Reynolds had driven John back to the great house he found his way to the kitchen and got his beer, and he became at once a centre of interest, being overwhelmed with questions concerning the events of the evening.

They are of every date, from ancient fragments, such as may be seen in the windows of the Library at Trinity, to the great Sir Joshua Reynolds' window in New College Chapel, and the still later examples of Burne-Jones' art, which are among the chief beauties of the Cathedral; and they include such splendid instances of old Flemish art as may be found in Lincoln College Chapel.

To these two ideals of Kinghood, then, the boy has reached, since the day he was drawing the lamb on the stone, as Cimabue passed by. You will not find two other such, that I know of, in the west of Europe; and yet there has been many a try at the painting of crowned heads, and King George III and Queen Charlotte, by Sir Joshua Reynolds, are very fine, no doubt.
