At heart the Puritans in England were unfriendly to him because of his religion; and, when persistent rumors reached Maryland that Baltimore's patent was doomed, some of the men of Providence appeared in England and urged that it be revoked.

The corporation came into existence by virtue of a special act of the legislature and could exercise only such powers and enjoy only such rights and privileges as that body saw fit to confer upon it. The legislature might refuse to grant a charter, but having granted it, it became a vested right which could not be revoked. The charter thus granted by the legislature was a special privilege.

From that moment he rose rapidly. Merely to enumerate all the titles he bore would almost take a page. He was by turns a very rich man and a very poor one, according as his royal and capricious master made or revoked his grants. The religious character of Hubert is not a matter of speculation, but of certainty.

In the first, all natural effects are ascribed to powers imparted to created beings, and inherent in them; that is, to powers which are supposed to have been conferred at the era of Creation, and to be still sustained by God's will in Providence, subject, however, to be suspended or revoked according to His pleasure.

"You'll have to stop this!" declared one. "Stop?" cried Gerrity. "What do you mean?" "There's to be no more street-speaking during the strike." "Who says so?" "Orders from the chief." "But we've got a permit." "All permits revoked. Cut it out." "But this is an outrage!" "We don't want any argument, young man " "But we're within our rights here." "Forget it, young feller!"

He afterwards composed a series of letters specially addressed to the Roman Catholic clergy of France. But expostulation was of no use. With each succeeding year the persecution became more bitter, until at length, in 1685, the Edict was revoked.
