He cast aside his staff and stood firm on his feet. His voice, when he spoke, rang out like a trumpet. 'Blessed be the Lord God of Israel! he cried. It is thus that He redeemeth His people. This Jesus is not to be the Captain of our armies, but the Savior of our souls.

"'Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: "'Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; "'Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with loving kindness and tender mercies. "'Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's." Never was there a grace so full of grace before.

The Psalmist's closing declaration is something very much deeper than that they who trust in God 'shall not be desolate. If you look at the previous clause, you will see that we must expect something more than such a particular blessing as that: 'The Lord redeemeth the soul of His servants. It is a great drop from that thought, instead of being a climax, to follow it with nothing more than, 'None of them that trust in Him shall be desolate. But the Revised Version accurately renders the words: 'None of them that trust in Him shall be condemned. There we have something that is worthy to follow 'The Lord redeemeth the soul of His servants, and we have a most striking anticipation of the clearest and most Evangelical teaching of the New Testament.

Deeply touching were those fervent words read out with solemn earnestness and pathos by the young man, in the presence of those he loved so dearly, specially when he lingered on the third and fourth verses, "Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with loving-kindness and tender mercies."

There lay His wondrous works before her, and her heart echoed the verse: "Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with loving-kindness and tender mercies," as though it were addressed especially to her and sung for her by the choir of women.

Meritoriously is, when the person engaging shall, at his own proper cost and charge, give a sufficient value or price for those he redeemeth. And thus was Jesus Christ a Saviour.

"Listen, John, learn what Love can do. "Love solves where learning perplexes. Love attracts the best in every one, for it gives the best, Love redeemeth, Love lifts up, Love enlightens, Love hath everlasting remembrance, Love advances the Soul, Love is a ransom, and the tears thereof are a prayer. Love is life. So much Love, so much Life. Oh, little Soul, if rich in Love, thou art mighty."

I love him who scattereth golden words in advance of his deeds, and always doeth more than he promiseth: for he seeketh his own down-going. I love him who justifieth the future ones, and redeemeth the past ones: for he is willing to succumb through the present ones. I love him who chasteneth his God, because he loveth his God: for he must succumb through the wrath of his God.

First, If we speak of redemption by purchase, then three things present themselves to our consideration I. The person redeeming. II. The nature of the price paid to redeem withal. III. The thing or state from which this redeemer with this price redeemeth. Now, with reference to his person, we have two things to inquire after. What this person was. How he addressed himself to this work.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits; who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with loving-kindness and tender mercies; who satisfieth thy mouth with good things, so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's. All that, and yet not satisfied! O David!
