In a flying machine the same thing is true, but while these problems may be known in a general way, the aviator has several unknown elements ever present, which make estimates difficult to solve. The first is the propeller pull. The energy of a motor, when put into a propeller, gives a pull of less than eight pounds for every horse power exerted.

Overhead the dark and bulky cylinders cut against the reflected glimmer on the skylights; below, valve-gear and connecting-rod flashed across the gloom, and the twinkling cranks spun in their shallow pit. One saw the big columns shake and strain as the crosshead shot up and down; the thrust-blocks groaned with the back push of the propeller.

I didn't stop to answer, but bolted off the barge and onto the motor-boat. Toon and Hendrik cast off the moorings, the chauffeur flew below to set his engine going; I took the wheel, pushed over the starting lever, the little propeller began to turn, and we were away on the first of the watery miles which stretch before us, for joy or sorrow.

And although he lay for a long while looking at his trouble through the magnifying glass of worry, he did sleep finally and without one definite plan for the morrow. Half an hour before dawn, Johnny went stumbling along the ledge to the cleft. On his broad shoulder was balanced the propeller. On his face was a look of fixed determination.

And I'm not the only hard luck artist. Aaron Solomons busted propeller and nearly got killed. Later. Cable. Tony Bean is dead. Killed flying.

Here the muffled throb of the propeller, and the rushing hiss of water as the prow of the great steamer sheared through the placid surface, furrowing up on either side a long line of phosphorescent wave. Such a contrast he who stood alone in the darkness, leaning over the taffrail, could appreciate nicely. There were quick, light footsteps. Somebody else was walking the deck.

"All ready!" came in a hearty voice from behind her. Peggy, with a quick movement, threw in the clutch that started the propeller to whirring. With a drone like that of a huge night-beetle, or prehistoric thunder-lizard, the machine leaped forward as a race-horse jumps under the raised barrier. In a blur of blue smoke it skimmed through the gap in the palings.

The strips should be made thin and then boiled, or, what is better still, should be placed in a deep pan, and held on a grid above the water, so they will be thoroughly steamed. They are then taken out and bent by hand, or secured between a form specially prepared for the purpose. Making the Propeller.

My model flew like a bird for fifty or a hundred yards or so, and then either dived and broke its nose or, what was commoner, reared up, slid back and smashed its propeller. The rhythm of the pitching puzzled me. I felt it must obey some laws not yet quite clearly stated.

"Say, fellows," cried Paul; "we've got to do something with these birds right away! First thing we know, one of them will get hit a squarer blow with the propeller and smash it. Then we'll crash as sure as I'm sitting here." This peril was very imminent, as all could see. John seized the shot-gun from its rack, and Tom one of the rifles. These were loaded.
