What did it matter that Prescott had reached second? Greg's disaster had put the side out. And now the Navy came back to bat. In this half of the second, three hits were taken out of Prescott's delivery, and at one time there were two sailors on bases. Then the Navy went out to grass and the Army marched in for a trial.

In a window in the building across the street a photographer poised his camera. Behind the shutter was a long-angled lens, fitted for taking pictures at a distance. Just as Dick Prescott's arms were within two feet of the weather vane the photographer exposed his plate. Dick, in the meantime, was moving in a sort of dumb way now. The keenness of his senses had left him.

I felt that there was some mystery about the girl some dark fatality so strange as to defy conjecture. I thought of Prescott's interview with her before their marriage, and the fatal termination of it. I coupled it with poor drunken Reeves' plaintive cry, "Why did she not tell me sooner?" and with the other words he had spoken. Then my mind ran over Mrs.

You see, Prescott's John had grown wise in his generation. After that he felt reasonably secure. It did seem almost unbelievable that such a situation could exist, but it was, nevertheless, a fact that it did.

It was easy to see where Jerome got his spirit. However, spirit needs long experience and great strength to assert itself fully at all times before long-recognized power. Jerome, going up the road to Doctor Prescott's, felt rather a fierce submission and obligatory humility than defiance.

When, having left his shoes, he was returning down the steep street of the little settlement, he saw Doctor Prescott's sulky ahead of him. Then, just before it reached a small weather-beaten house on the right, he saw a woman rush out as if to stop it, and a man follow after her and pull her back through the door.

"Taking the cash discount, it comes to a dollar less than what I was ready to pay you," he said. "Now make out the list and we'll try to get the thing fixed up before I go." Wandle sat down for a few moments, for he had received a shock. His suspicions had already been aroused, and Prescott's motive in going to Navarino was obvious; besides, he thought he had read Laxton's name on the envelope.

"I wonder who it can be?" Prescott's team, which had been growing impatient of the cold, began to move, and he was occupied for the next minute in quieting them. Then he looked around, started violently, and stood very still, his eyes fixed on the approaching man. "Jernyngham, by all that's wonderful!" he gasped, and sent a shout ringing across the snow: "Cyril!"

Prescott's face beamed with satisfaction as he held his field glass to his eyes and saw where the bullets threw up the dirt. "Splendidly done, men!" he cried. "We'll send 'em another. Ready; load. Aim fire!" Once more the volley crashed out splendidly. Then the men lay on their hot-barreled rifles. No more shots came their way just then.

"He's pinned down by the car!" gasped Deputy Simmons after finding Prescott's submerged body and giving it a hard tug. "Valden, help me lift the car on this side! You two boys pull your friend out when we lift the car. Now!" Though Deputy Valden was able to employ only his left hand, he used it with all his strength. "Here he comes," panted Dave, tugging at Dick's body with all his might.
