To Evan Nepean, Esq. &c. &c. &c. Admiralty. Cæsar, off Cape Trafalgar, 14th July 1801. I herewith enclose, for their lordships' further information, the statement I have received from Captain Keats, to whom the greatest praise is due for his gallant conduct in the service alluded to.

Timber sent to Port Jackson. Observations on the navigation near Norfolk Island. Number of persons on the settlement. Nepean and Phillip Islands described. Corn reaped. A party sent to Ball Bay. Talk-work of the convicts. The free people exercised. Plot to seize the island discovered. Orders made public for the preservation of regularity. Oath of allegiance administered.

As the ebb goes very strong nine hours to the eastward, the most convenient place for anchoring off Sydney Bay, on account of the boats, is, with the body of Nepean's Isle east-north-east half east, or east by north; the flag-staff north-north-east half east, Point Ross north-west by west, and the west end of Phillip Isle south-south-east nineteen fathoms; but here the ground is rocky: the best anchoring is with the middle of Nepean Isle east-north-east half east, the west end of Phillip Isle south by east, the outermost breaker off Point Ross north-west by west half west, the flag-staff north by east half east, and Collins's Head north-east by east half east, seventeen fathoms clear ground.

I herewith enclose a letter from Captain Ferris of his Majesty's late ship Hannibal, which I request you will please to lay before their lordships; and I have only to express my deep regret that his well-meant endeavours to bring his ship to close action should have occasioned so severe a loss. I have the honour to be, sir, Your most obedient servant, JAS. SAUMAREZ. Evan Nepean, Esq. Admiralty.

The Casuarina, making all sail for Nepean Bay westward, sighted the leading ship in Investigator Strait. But Baudin did not wait even then. He kept Le Geographe on her course, under a full head of sail, without permitting the Casuarina to come up and report, or inquiring after the success of her work. The two ships soon lost sight of each other.

I had forgotten it all again by the time we were ready for our journey to Bathurst. Mr. Deane was to drive with Mary in a light trap and I was to ride, for I had a good steady horse at stable in Sydney growing fat and restive for want of exercise. So we set out and went as far as the inn at Gum Ferry on the Nepean before we made any change in our arrangements.

Greater complexity in the Blue Mountains these are undoubted earth folds; the Nepean River flows through an offshoot of a fold, the valley being made as the fold was elevated curious valleys made by erosion of hard rock overlying soft. River piracy Domestic, the short circuiting of a meander, such as at Coo in the Ardennes; Foreign, such as Shoalhaven River, Australia stream has captured river.

I have judged it necessary to send Captain Domett with my despatches, who will give their lordships such further particulars as shall have occurred to him on the victory we have gained. I am, &c. To Evan Nepean, Esq. The enemy made their escape into L'Orient.

Captain Hood's merits are held in too high estimation to receive additional lustre from any praise I can bestow; but I only do justice to my feelings, when I observe that in no instance have I known superior bravery to that displayed by him on this occasion. I have the honour to be, sir, Your most obedient servant, JAS. SAUMAREZ. To Evan Nepean, Esq. Admiralty.

Returning to the ship we placed a buoy* on the five-fathom bar at the eastern entrance of the South Channel, the bearings from which are Whale Head South 33 degrees West, and Arthur's Seat South 79 degrees East; Points Nepean and Lonsdale being a little open.
