Everything was cleanly smeared with coloured clay. On the walls hung sabres, hunting-whips, nets for birds, fishing-nets, guns, elaborately carved powder-horns, gilded bits for horses, and tether-ropes with silver plates. The small window had round dull panes, through which it was impossible to see except by opening the one moveable one. Around the windows and doors red bands were painted.

A moveable armillary sphere, three cubits in diameter. A quadrant of solid brass, one cubit radius, and divided into minutes by Nonian circles. An astronomical radius of solid brass, three cubits long. An astronomical ring of brass, a cubit in diameter. A small brass astrolabe.

For, with the moveable eye, the muscular sense comes into play in exactly the same way as with the moveable hand; and the notion of change of place, plus the sense of effort, gives rise to a conception of visual space, which runs exactly parallel with that of tangible space.

So moveable turrets, constructed of the spice-trees which grew in rank luxuriance all around, were filled with earth and stones, and advanced towards the fort. Had the natives been as docile to learn as the Hollanders were eager to teach a few easy lessons in the military art, the doom of Andreas Hurtado de Mendoza would have been sealed.

The legs and feet make up the second division of what I call the moveable parts of the body: the legs serve for two purposes, they may be used as aids or corrections to the horse, they should then be kept near the sides of the horse, and in a perpendicular line with the horseman's body; for being near the part of the horse's body where his feeling is most delicate, they are ready to do their office in the instant they are wanted.

During these four miserable days I was quite jolly in this little snuggery more so than I should have been if confined the same time to the gilded and uncomfortable saloon of a first-class steamer. Our ship had two masts, if masts they can be called c which were great moveable triangles.

Thus the beds of rivers are to be considered as the passages through which both the lighter and heavier bodies of the land are gradually travelling; and it is through them that those moveable bodies are from time to time protruded towards the sea shore.

We find that the astrological expression of this constellation, the sign Aquarius, governs the legs, and is the natural emblem of the changeable, moveable, migratory forces, of the body, forming a perfect parallel with its interior symbol. There is a great deal contained in this zodiacal sign worthy of deep study and reflection. XII. Pisces

In other respects they scarcely differed from the people I was living with. They brought me a couple of birds, some shells and insects; showing that the report of the white man and his doing had reached their country. There was probably hardly a man in Aru who had not by this time heard of me. Besides the domestic utensils already mentioned, the moveable property of a native is very scanty.

"And do you know," he added, with a smile, "they make these things so well now that one can scarcely tell a false foot from a real one, with joint and moveable instep, and toes that work with springs, so that people can walk with them quite creditably indeed they can; I do not jest, I assure you."
