The peasant, or moujik, is a primitive and generally an entirely illiterate person, but he possesses qualities which his more sophisticated brothers in the West may well envy and admire, a profound common-sense, a grand simplicity of life and outlook, and an unshakable faith in the unseen world.

In this point they resemble the Russian peasantry. And yet, who can pity the moujik? His cheeks are altogether too round, and his morals too superbly bestial; he has clearly been created to sing and starve by turns.

Then he got up, said good-bye, and went to pay Marfa Timofeevna a visit. Maria Dmitrievna looked after him with an expression of dissatisfaction, and thought to herself, "What a bear! what a moujik! Well, now I understand why his wife couldn't remain faithful to him." Marfa Timofeevna was sitting in her room, surrounded by her court.

But Rogojin understood how things were tending, at last. An inexpressibly painful expression came over his face. He wrung his hands; a groan made its way up from the depths of his soul. "Surrender her, for God's sake!" he said to the prince. All around burst out laughing. "What? Surrender her to YOU?" cried Daria Alexeyevna. "To a fellow who comes and bargains for a wife like a moujik!

'Whoever saves me is my Messhiach, he declared suddenly, and plucked at my hand to kiss it. 'Now, you shock me, I said, pushing him away. 'No, no, he said; 'I agree with the word of the moujik: "the good people are God." 'Then I suppose you are what is called a Zionist, I said. Do not fight me for I am come to save you, and I shall utterly obliterate any man, be he fellah, Moujik, or even the great Marmalade himself, who prefers fighting to being saved.

There is no suggestion of flabbiness about her and so she can impart to us the soul of the struggling moujik, the spirit of a nation, the figure on the prow of a Greek bark.... And when she interprets the Marseillaise she seems indeed to feel the mighty moment. July 14, 1917. Margaret Anglin Produces As You Like It

Not till they came to decide on what men they would take with them did Paul recall how he had been disposed of earlier in the night. "That big moujik who showed me to my room last evening!" he cried suddenly, turning to Peter. "Where is the dog? It was he who struck me down!" "By the Lord!" exclaimed Andrieff, "that explains why the horses are gone! The cur is a traitor!
