Butler, the author of "Hudibras," died of starvation in Rose Alley, the same place in which Dryden was beaten by hired ruffians. Otway was hunted by bailiffs to his last hiding-place on Tower Hill. His last act was to beg a shilling of a gentleman, who gave him a guinea; and buying a loaf to appease his hunger, he choked at the first mouthful.

Though the title seems to imply as if his poem was in imitation of Scarron, who has translated eight books of Virgil in the same manner, yet they who will compare both these pieces, will possibly find, that he has not only exceeded the French, but all those who have made any attempts on that kind of poetry, the incomparable author of Hudibras excepted. Mr.

"If the parliament did not think they had a plenitude of power in this matter, they would not have damned all the canons of 1640." What doth he mean? A grave divine could not answer all his playhouse and Alsatia cant, &c. He hath read Hudibras, and many plays. Ibid. "If the parliament can annul ecclesiastical laws, they must be able to make them." Distinguish, and shew the silliness, &c. Ibid.

We need scarcely say that there was joy at the court of King Hudibras when Bladud returned home, cured of his terrible disease. The first person whom the prince hurried off to visit, after seeing his father, and embracing his mother and sister, was the northern chief Gadarn.

Of all this burlesque and doggerel the most famous is Butler's Hudibras, a work to which we can trace many of the prejudices that still prevail against Puritanism. Of Butler himself we know little; he is one of the most obscure figures in our literature.

She was Fair to look upon, but she was not pulling very hard for the Uplifting of the Sex. It was suspected that she came to the Meetings just to Kill Time and see what the Others were Wearing. She refused to buckle down to Literary Work, for she was a good deal more interested in the Bachelors who filled the Windows of the new Men's Club than she was in the Butler who wrote "Hudibras."

And the republican, having now fulfilled the end of his visit, rose and departed. Bound to suffer persecution And martyrdom with resolution, T'oppose himself against the hate And vengeance of the incensed state. Hudibras.

Dicky Browne, stooping towards her, whispers, softly: "Quoth Hudibras 'It is in vain, I see, to argue 'gainst the grain!" "I don't understand," says Portia; just because she doesn't want to. "Don't you? well, you ought.

I am afraid that great Numbers of those who admire the incomparable Hudibras, do it more on account of these Doggerel Rhymes than of the Parts that really deserve admiration. I am sure I have heard the Pulpit, Drum Ecclesiastick, Was beat with fist instead of a Stick, and There was an ancient sage Philosopher Who had read Alexander Ross over,

"Some priests assume to themselves an arbitrary power of excluding men from the Lord's Supper." His scheme; that any body may administer the sacraments, women or children, &c. "One no more than another can be reckoned a priest." See his scheme. Here he disgraces what the law enacts, about the manner of consecrating, &c. "Churches serve to worse purposes than bear-gardens." This from Hudibras.
