In general you may say of the Long Tom family that their favourite habitat is among loose soil on the tops of open hills; they are slow and unwieldy, and very open in all their actions. They are good shooting guns; Tom on the 7th made a day's lovely practice all round our battery.

"The last chapter of the fur romance" will not have been written as long as frost and muskeg provide a habitat for furtive game, and strong men set forth to traverse lone places with no defense but their own valiant spirit. The other example is of a man known to every fur buyer of St. Louis and Chicago and St. Paul Mr. Hall, the chief commissioner of furs for the Hudson's Bay Company.

The Fire People must have increased in numbers until they pressed uncomfortably against the bounds of their habitat. They were expanding, and in the course of their expanding they drove the Folk before them, and settled down themselves in the caves and occupied the territory that we had occupied. But Lop-Ear and I little dreamed of all this when we found ourselves in the Fire People's stronghold.

Keeping well within the trees, giants of the wild nursed in this cradle of sun and water, he bore to the north and ever his eager eyes peered between the bolls at the distant habitat. He had gone but short space when, suddenly, he stopped, drawn up by sight of what lay in his path.

The ground that my morning rambles cover extends from Twenty-third Street to Washington Park, and laterally from Sixth Avenue to Broadway. The early rising artisans that I meet here, crossing three avenues, the milkmen, the truck-drivers, the workman, even the occasional tramp, wherever they may come from or go to, or what their real habitat may be, are invariably Americans.

There is a fortune to be secured by anyone who will bring to market a lot of O. noeveum in fair condition. Its habitat is perfectly well known. I am not aware that it has a delicate constitution; but no collector is so rash or so enthusiastic as to try that adventure again, now that its perils are understood; and no employer is so reckless as to urge him.

West of Mackenzie River and north of British Columbia is a game region almost similar to Labrador in its furred habitat, with the exception that the western preserve is warmer and more wooded. Northward from Ontario is another hinterland which from its very nature must always be a great hunting ground.

Such we may believe was the influence which led the ancestors of the Pueblo tribes to adopt an almost waterless area for their habitat. It is apparent at least that they entered the country wherein their remains occur while comparatively a rude people, and worked out there almost wholly their incipient civilization. Of this there is important linguistic evidence.

On this continent one species, at least, had reached to the vicinity of its present habitat before the glaciation of the region.

The objection to music-hall artists on the stage is, not only that they take the bread out of the mouths of 'the profession, which is a minor consideration for the public, but that they have the effect of familiarising general audiences, and children especially, with a style and a kind of singing, dancing, and 'business' which, however it may be relished by a certain class of the population, ought steadily to be confined to its original habitat.
