I am most happy to have this public opportunity of acknowledging the obligation, and of repaying it, as far as it can be repaid, by the poor tribute of my profound regard, and the earnest expression of my sincere respect. Gentlemen, I will no longer detain you than to propose a toast: The City of New York; herself the noblest eulogy on the Union of the States.

The Foleys were, like their neighbours the Harleys, Whigs and Puritans. Thomas Foley lived on terms of close intimacy with Baxter, in whose writings he is mentioned with warm eulogy. The opinions and the attachments of Paul Foley were at first those of his family.

Plutarch, the prince of ancient biographers, put fact and eulogy together, cited characteristic sayings or doings of his hero, quoted contemporary judgements, and wove the whole into a charming narrative, good to read, pleasant to remember, perhaps not without use as a lesson in conventional morality; but with little real historical criticism in it, and as little, or less, attempt at any effective reconstruction of a character.

The incident excited great interest at court, and Gasparo dedicated his poem to Lodovico "mio Duca" and introduced an eloquent eulogy in honour of his friend Bramante in the first canto.

This paragraph, however, is not the peroration of a eulogy upon 'our unrivaled happiness. It attempts merely to lay stress on such facts as these, that it is not now possible to hang a clergyman of the Church of England for forgery, as was done in 1777; that a man may not be deprived of the custody of his own children because he holds heterodox religious opinions, as happened in 1816.

Remarks of a laudatory nature on the princely munificence of Hanborough's mayor, Hanborough's corporation, Hanborough's leading citizens, a eulogy of their public glories and private virtues with a little thrown in about Shakespeare, Scott, and the Lord-Lieutenant of the county would be adequately appreciated.

From the hour when the door of the tomb at Mount Vernon closed behind his coffin to the present instant, the chorus of praise and eulogy has never ceased, but has swelled deeper and louder with each succeeding year.

This, in the first pleasant season of my marriage when the leaves were yet green and fresh upon the tree of love was grateful to my feelings. I felt happy to discover that my judgment had not erred in the selection of my wife. I stimulated her industry that I might listen to my friend's eulogy. I suggested subjects for her pencil. I fitted up an apartment especially as a studio for her use.

The halls of Congress resounded with voices of apt eulogy. After a pathetic discourse by the Chaplain of the House of Representatives, the remains of the departed statesman were followed by his family and immediate friends, and by the senators and representatives of the State of Massachusetts, as chief mourners.

At the seventh verse the Psalm abruptly passes to a eulogy of "The Law" the moral law shrined in the priestly Thorah: The law of the Lord is an undefiled law, Converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, And giveth wisdom unto the simple. Here we have, say our learned critics, two psalms welded into one, a song of nature and a song of the soul.
