Rather a slender thread one would think upon which to hang a theory so far-reaching in its consequences. Nor was it necessary to go as far as Guiana and Brazil to find instances of the domestication of wild fowl by aborigines. Among our North American Indians it was a by no means uncommon practice to capture and tame birds.

Here are other passages taken from the latest edition of the work. "When discussing special cases, Mr. In his subsequent work, The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication, where he goes into full detail, Mr. Darwin gives more numerous illustrations of the inherited effects of use and disuse. The following are some of the cases, quoted from volume i of the first edition.

The goose. The peacock. The guinea fowl. Exceptional causes of variation under domestication. Alleged tendency to reversion. Instances. Sterility of hybrids. Prepotency of pollen of same species, but of different race. Mortality in young gallinaceous hybrids. A bar to intermixture exists somewhere. Guinea-pigs. Summary and conclusion.

These considerations make it plain that it is our duty by our civilization, to do all in our power to save these species and at the same time to essay their domestication, for only when under the protection of man can they be regarded as insured from destruction. The task of bringing wild creatures into our domestic fold is one of very varied difficulty.

Patriarchal society grew out of the necessities of a pastoral existence; indeed, it was the discovery of the domestication of animals which gave rise to it. Among other interesting features which were developed are permanent marriage, slavery, and ancestor worship.

The domestication of the elephant, and its employment in war or in the pageant, had ever proved a stumbling block to the king; but the appearance of the hugest of beasts in his hunting harness struck the chord of a new idea. "I will have a nunber caught on the Roby," he exclaimed, "that you may tame then, and that I too may ride on an elephant before I die!"

What a pity he's gone he'd have been so glad. I'm really alone I hope you don't mind. Peter, please don't look." Peter was not bent on looking; his eyes had occupation enough in Biddy's own agreeable aspect, which was full of a rare element of domestication and responsibility.

MIDDLE PERIOD. From the domestication of animals, &c., to the invention of the process of smelting iron ore. LATER PERIOD. From the knowledge of iron to the invention of a phonetic alphabet, or the use of hieroglyphs upon stone as an equivalent. We are now to consider the remaining usages and customs named in the last chapter.

We are still, it is true, waiting for the domestication of the new force, its practical application to daily use. We are waiting for the all-revealing, decisive manifestation which will remove our last doubts and throw light upon the problem down to its very source. But let us admit that we are likewise waiting for this manifestation in the great majority of sciences.

Hatch had said in his brilliant book, The Influence of Greek Ideas and Usages upon the Christian Church, 1891, that the domestication of Greek philosophy in the Church signified a defection from the Sermon on the Mount. The centre of gravity of the Gospel was changed from life to doctrine, from morals to metaphysics, from goodness to orthodoxy. The change was portentous.
