Dolet's Orationes ad Tholosam appeared through the hand of a friend, but with the most transparent figments. There was, therefore, abundant precedent for denying authorship. But there is a difference between the light veil of modesty and clouds of dust raised in apprehension.

It prevailed in Robert Stephanus' Latin Thesaurus , the most considerable work of its kind that had been compiled since the invention of printing; but Dolet's Commentaries on the Latin Tongue , are practically a reversion to the arrangement by roots.

The reason seems chiefly to have been Dolet's unsparing exposure of the immoralities of monks and priests, and of the plan of the Sorbonne to put down the art of printing in France. In Peignot is preserved a long list of the names of the works to the publication of which he lent his aid.

The Faculty of Theology censured very severely Dolet's translation of one of the Dialogues of Plato, entitled Axiochus, and especially the passage "Apres la mort, tu ne seras rien," which Dolet rendered, "Apres la mort, tu ne seras plus rien du tout." The additional words were supposed to convict Dolet of heresy. He certainly disliked the monks, as the following epigram plainly declares:
