George might have gone back to the office, but he was going home instead, because he could think creatively just as well outside the office as inside so why should he accept the convention of the ordinary professional man. A single consideration appealed to him: How could he now best serve his country? Beyond question he could now serve his country best as an architect.

He felt too close to poetry to be able to study it with sufficient detachment, so he turned to painting an art with which he felt sufficiently familiar without being connected with it creatively hoping that if he could discover the laws of one art they would prove applicable to others.

To write those three volumes a man needs have in him a big, glowing heart, thus to flood with passionate life all the men and scenes of a momentous volcanic epoch; a lively, strong, intellectual vision he must have, to grasp in their full reality the multitudinous and diverse facts and incidents so swiftly begotten under the pulsation of millions of contentious brains; he needs a literary faculty finely artistic, creatively imaginative, to enrank the figures of such vast tumultuous scenes, to depict the actors in each, to present vividly in clear relief the rapid succession of eventful convulsions.

The Italian genius is not creatively imaginative in the highest sense.

In the same way the mystery could dispense with man, should he too fail creatively to change and develop. The eternal creative mystery could dispose of man, and replace him with a finer created being. Just as the horse has taken the place of the mastodon. It was very consoling to Birkin, to think this.

Instead we employ the method of self-contemplation knowing that this is the creative method, and so we contemplate ourselves as allied to the infinite Love and Wisdom of the Divine Spirit which will take form through our conscious thought, and so act creatively as a Special Providence entirely devoted to guarding, guiding, providing for, and illuminating us.
