What is here meant by the number of dimensions, I think I may assume to be known. Now we take an example of a two-dimensional continuum which is finite, but unbounded. We imagine the surface of a large globe and a quantity of small paper discs, all of the same size. We place one of the discs anywhere on the surface of the globe.
Man's intelligence is a by-product of activity. For purposes of action it is the externality of things that matters. The inner connection is relatively unimportant. Men act with precision on matter, because perception cuts up the continuum of matter into bodies, defined bodies no two of which can occupy the same space.

There is, however, a remainder of emotion as there is a remainder of sensation; and the importance of this remainder of the continuum in which lie all particular pleasures and pains was insisted upon in the beginning.
