Carlyle has assailed the dogmatic temper in religion, and this is work that goes deeper than to assail dogmas. Not even Comte himself has harder words for metaphysics than Mr. Carlyle. 'The disease of Metaphysics' is perennial. Questions of Death and Immortality, Origin of Evil, Freedom and Necessity, are ever appearing and attempting to shape something of the universe.

The Comte de Roye was a Huguenot, and, at the revocation of the edict of Nantes, had taken refuge, with his wife, in Denmark, where he had been made grand marshal and commander of all the troops.

"My mother is still on the watch," said Charles to the Comte de Solern. "She has her forge as you have yours," remarked the German. "Dear count, what do you think of a king who is reduced to become a conspirator?" said Charles IX., bitterly, after a pause. "I think, sire, that if you would allow me to fling that woman into the river, as your young cousin said, France would soon be at peace."

When we got to Besancon Madame d'Urfe left me, and on the next day I journeyed towards Geneva with the mother and daughter. On the way I not only did not speak to my companions, I did not so much as look at them. I made them have their meals with a servant from the Franche Comte, whom I had taken on M. de Schaumburg's recommendation.

It seems that Queen Mary of England was something of a coquette in Holland. Comte d'Avaux, the French Ambassador, told me himself that he had had a secret interview with her at the apartments of one of the Queen's Maids of Honour, Madame Treslane.

After this unsatisfactory attempt to trace the outline of Social Statics, M. Comte passes to a topic on which he is much more at home the subject of his most eminent speculations; Social Dynamics, or the laws of the evolution of human society. Two questions meet us at the outset: Is there a natural evolution in human affairs? and is that evolution an improvement?

See The Great Intendant, pp. 115-16. For example, Harvard College was founded in 1636, and there was a printing-press at Cambridge, Mass., in 1638. Louis de Buade, Comte de Frontenac et de Palluau, was born in 1620.

"With grief and trouble, my dear friend?" cried the comte; "oh, what?" "In two words. I have conspired against the king; that conspiracy has failed, and, at this moment, I am doubtless pursued." "You are pursued! a conspiracy! Eh! my friend, what do you tell me?" "The saddest truth. I am entirely ruined." "Well, but Porthos this title of duke what does all that mean?"

"'Well, gentlemen, you find yourselves compelled to dine with priests, said Comte Octave to his colleagues. 'I do not know whether Grandville can overcome his horror of a priest's gown "'It depends on the priest. "'One of them is my uncle, and the other is the Abbe Gaudron, said I. 'Do not be alarmed; the Abbe Fontanon is no longer second priest at Saint-Paul

His excellency the Comte de Cazeneau, commandant of Louisbourg, has persuaded him to convey himself, and you, and some others, to the nearest French fort. It is the intention of Captain Ducrot to sail back up the Bay of Fundy, and land you at Grand Pré, from which place you can reach Louisbourg by land." To this Laborde murmured a few indistinct words in reply, while Mimi made no remark whatever.
